Apollo Medical Holdings Inc. has reached an agreement with Blue Shield of California to provide doctors for the insurer’s policy holders at hospitals the company already services, Apollo announced Tuesday. The Glendale manager of hospital-based practices has contracts to provide doctors for inpatients at 28 hospitals and long-term care facilities in Los Angeles and the San Joaquin Valley. The agreement covers Blue Shield policy holders in its PPO, or preferred provider organization, insurance plans. As part of the agreement, Apollo will extend inpatient care to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angles for Blue Shield PPO and some HMO policy holders. The San Francisco insurer will work with Apollo doctors on patient management throughout the hospital stay. Following discharge, Blue Shield members will receive follow-up care and prescriptions from the Apollo staff. “Changes in the health care environment are increasing the need for a coordinated approach that focuses on efficiencies in managing patients and on quality patient care,” said Dr. Marc Richmond, regional medical director at Blue Shield. Apollo shares closed unchanged at 53 cents with no shares trading hands over the counter.
