Semtech Completes Sell-Off

Semtech Corp. announced Wednesday it has completed the sale of its defense and microwave communications business. The Camarillo semiconductor developer sold off the business for an undisclosed price to Jariet Technologies Inc. in exchange for a minority stake in that company. Company executives announced in early March during its fourth quarter earnings conference call the sale of the defense and microwave operations due to concerns about time to revenue in that business. Semtech bought the defense and microwave business in 2009 with the acquisition of Sierra Monolithics, an Irvine-based developer of analog chips for communications systems and applications. The deal was valued at $180 million. “While we believe that it is a good long-term opportunity, we also believe it is a relatively low priority for us today,” Emeka Chukwu, chief financial officer said during the call. Semtech also announced that Charles Harper, its chief strategy officer, had left the company to become chief executive at Jariet Technologies, which incorporated in January. Shares closed up 17 cents, or less than 1 percent, to $25.93 on the Nasdaq.
