Brief Life For Historical Collection

A pop-up store is here today and gone tomorrow. Or in the case of Nathan Turner, in the Valley for three months and gone forever. The L.A. interior designer is coming to the new Village at Westfield Topanga mall – and he’s bringing his antiques and American-inspired furnishings with him. Most designers work in offices tucked away behind industrial parks, rather than paying for a storefront in a glitzy mall. But Turner, who already has a store in West Hollywood, has partnered with developer Westfield Corp. to open Nathan Turner American Style in Woodland Hills on Sept. 18. It’s the same day the Village at Topanga – a $350 million outdoor mall that will bridge Westfield’s Topanga and Promenade malls with 88 new tenants – will open to the public. “I’ve always wanted to do a pop-up shop. I was originally looking to do something on the East Coast, but then I met a person from Westfield and it just felt right,” said Turner, 42. “I loved the Village when I did the walkthrough. It was like a perfect match.” The shop will carry items based on Turner’s modern aesthetic. The assortment of American-made and -inspired products for resale will include pottery from Vermont, garden accessories from Idaho, and handmade gloves and hats from upstate New York. Prices can range from $30 for a dog leash to $6,000 for a 19th century chest of drawers. As Turner describes it, the shop will resemble an old-fashioned mercantile shop, such as those depicted in the family TV shows “Little House on the Prairie” or “Anne of Green Gables.” During the 19th century, patrons would go to a single stop in their little town to purchase anything, whether it was fabric to make clothes or flour and spices to cook with. In addition to selling antiques and pieces from his furniture line, Nathan Turner for Elite Leather, Turner will also host themed events at the store. He has planned parties with modern country, English, Turkish, French and Argentine themes. The designer has been in the industry for 12 years, and has a shop in L.A.’s designer district at 8546 Melrose Ave. in West Hollywood. “Nathan’s aesthetic is a natural fit for the Village, and we are excited to bring our shoppers this progressive retail-lifestyle hybrid concept that they can’t find anywhere else,” said Larry Green, senior vice president of development for Westfield. – Champaign Williams
