Business Journal Wins Design Kudos

San Fernando Valley Business Journal has won two awards, both for design, at an annual competition held by the main trade association for business journals and magazines. The Business Journal won the Gold award for Best Overall Design and the Silver award in the category of Best Feature Layout. The awards were presented at a banquet June 11 at the end of the annual conference of the Alliance of Area Business Publishers in Des Moines, Iowa. Judging was by the journalism school of the University of Missouri for work published in 2015. In giving the top award for Best Overall Design among small tabloids, the judges said: “This is a buttoned-down publication. The fundamentals – such as spacing, labeling and typography – are consistent. The front-page feature windows are enticing and interesting. The end-of-the-year photo package recycled used and unused photos from throughout the year. It was presented beautifully. The high-quality paper and printing shows off every design decision nicely.” The Silver award for Best Feature Layout was for the January 2015 package “Seven Over 70,” about executives who are 70 years old or older but are still working hard. The judges said the feature “had strong portraiture, consistency and graphics. The design approach was minimal; that allows the photos and type to emerge from the pages, which are framed with white space. Every detail is successful, down to the arrows to show the story continues.” Both winning entries showcased the work of Production Director Sally Jones and Production Artist Kristin Skaggs-Kirby. The Los Angeles Business Journal, a sister publication, won the contest’s top honor: the Gold award for Best Newspaper. It was the sixth time in the last eight years the L.A. Business Journal won that significant trophy.
