Applebee’s Root Beer With a Kick

In the midst of the craft beer boom, San Fernando Valley chain Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar is bringing a new spin on root beer for foodies nationwide. Small Town Brewery’s Not Your Father’s Root Beer is now available as a stand-alone beverage at all Applebee’s restaurants. The 12-ounce bottle of beer contains 5.9 percent alcohol and is specially crafted with unique spices to give the root beer flavor a kick. “The arena of craft beer is a huge, growing segment in the American bar and grill. Other craft cocktails and craft sodas are starting to flourish, so the idea of Not Your Father’s Root Beer is something that fits into this new craft,” said Corey Will, Applebee’s executive director of beverage innovation. “Not Your Father’s Root Beer has built a reputation and this product is one of the top-rated crafts in America, so it’s trending very strongly with our targeted consumers.” Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar is owned by Glendale-headquartered restaurant operator DineEquity Inc., which also owns IHOP. Applebee’s began selling Not Your Father’s Root Beer in its U.S. locations this month, making it the largest restaurant rollout for the craft beer. Small Town Brewery, based in Wauconda, Ill., was founded in 2010 and grew from a small local brewery to a national brand. Its Not Your Father’s Root Beer and Not Your Father’s Ginger Ale brands are sold in six-packs at stores nationwide. Tim Kovac, founder of Small Town Brewery, said the partnership with Applebee’s will help further the brand’s presence in bars and restaurants. “Both Not Your Father’s Root Beer and Applebee’s share a similar soft spot with the public – two All-American brands that people love,” Kovac said in an email to the Business Journal. “The partnership also shows Applebee’s desire to bring their customers a product that has become so popular among craft brews.” In addition to serving the bottled root beer, Applebee’s is introducing the Not Your Father’s Adult Root Beer Float to its menu.
