Vineyards at Porter Ranch, the $150 million retail, residential and commercial center years in the making, broke ground Thursday in the northern Los Angeles community as developers announced its newest anchor tenant.

Community members, civic leaders, politicians, business executives and members of the developer team, Shapell Liberty Investment Properties, the joint venture between Shapell Industries Inc. and Liberty Building Co., both of Beverly Hills, attended the event.

“We are very happy to see this final jewel completing the dream and vision of Porter Ranch.” said John Love, vice president of commercial properties for Shapell.

The center’s newest tenant will be a Whole Foods Market, the team announced, joining Kaiser Permanente Inc. of Oakland, which was the first tenant announced earlier this year. The health care provider will be taking a 50,000-square-foot medical building at the center.

The 345,000-square-foot mixed-use project at 19821 Rinaldi St. has been planned since the early 1990s.

The large center will occupy the northwest and southwest corners of Rinaldi Street at its intersection with Porter Ranch Drive. Retail and commercial space accounts for 215,000 square feet of the overall project, and that will include a 120-room hotel. The residential component will feature a 266-unit apartment complex and be attached by walkways to the retail and commercial part.

The center will be an open-air environment with meandering pedestrian pathways into various shopping, dining and entertainment experiences. Other amenities include a center green for community events and a 4,000-square-foot community room. The Whole Foods Market will occupy the section to the north of Rinaldi Street along with a movie theater, retail and restaurants. The commercial component is scheduled for completion in late 2018,

Vineyards was previously the Village at Porter Ranch. The concept powered through the deaths of the two Shapell brothers who ran the company, the sale of Shapell’s residential division to Toll Bros. and myriad twists and turns, stops and starts.
