Carlos Amezcua On Screen With ‘Carlos & Lisa’

Long time KTLA news anchor Carlos Amezcua has returned to the Los Angeles airwaves with a new venture that pairs up digital distribution with a traditional broadcast station. Amezcua has started Beond.TV with Lisa Remillard, his former co-anchor from his time in San Diego. The pair host Beond’s signature program, “Carlos & Lisa,” which airs mornings on KDOC-TV, an independent station in Santa Ana, and can be viewed on the Beond.TV website on laptops, smart phones and tablets. A half-hour lifestyle and news show filmed from a small studio space in Agoura Hills, “Carlos & Lisa” gives the hosts the opportunity to flex their journalistic skills while having some fun as well. “That is what makes our show different from every other talk show in America in that we are journalists doing our job as journalists in an entertaining way but informing them at the same time,” Amezcua said. But the pair also want to get a message across that broadcast television still matters and that legacy broadcast stations still play an important role in local television news. That in turn makes Beond.TV set up perfectly for people who do not have a computer or a smart phone. “People still rely on their television for a lot of information,” Amezcua said. “For us to ignore that as a digital company would be foolish.” Amezcua and Remillard met in 2015 when he came out of retirement as a favor to a friend by taking a co-anchor position on “Good Morning San Diego” on KUSI-TV. He previously had worked at KTTV Fox 11 for six years and prior to that for 16 years at KTLA, where he co-hosted the popular morning show from its start in 1991. Remillard began her television news career in Tallahassee, Fla., and later was in Tampa and Las Vegas before landing in San Diego in 2014. She left KUSI in 2018. Remillard describes “Good Morning San Diego” as being a traditional morning show with news, weather and traffic but broke with tradition in terms of its length – five hours every weekday. That gave the pair a lot of time to talk and it was soon evident that they had a lot to talk about despite being from different generations yet also having some similarities. “It turned out to be very entertaining for the viewers,” Remillard said. “When we realized we had this schtick that people liked and latched onto, we decided let’s do this on our own.” So was born Beond.TV and “Carlos & Lisa.” The venture is currently self-funded and with contributions from family and friends. It is preparing to go out to investors. The digital side of the project brings in money from ad sales and programmatic ads connected with topics the two hosts discuss on their show. “In the future we are probably going to have some subscriber-based content that is exclusive to subscribers,” Amezcua said. “We are not quite there yet.” There are plans to get onto more broadcast channels, starting with Palm Springs and Santa Barbara. “Palm Spring and Santa Barbara want us, which is great,” Amezcua said. “We want to expand nationwide.”
