Groundbreaking: Calabasas Hotel

Ground has officially broken for Cambria Hotel Calabasas – Malibu, a three-story, 125-room hotel off the 101 freeway near Agoura Road.Owned by Choice Hotels International Inc., the Calabasas hospitality destination, which will go up at 26300 Rondell Road, is being developed by Malibu-based Weintraub Real Estate Group. It is expected to open in early 2021.At the July 10 groundbreaking, Richard Weintraub, chief executive of Weintraub Real Estate Group, was joined by Paul Kristedja, founding partner of KPRS Construction; Calabasas Mayor David Shapiro; Mayor Pro Tem Alicia Weintraub, no relation to Richard Weintraub; Calabasas Councilmember Fred Gaines; and Choice Hotels Director of Development Scott Lockwood. The Calabasas location will further the Cambria brand’s presence in California; it currently includes one hotel at LAX and will soon include flags planted in Anaheim, Sonoma and Napa by end of 2019. A Cambria LA Spring Street is also under development in downtown Los Angeles.“Breaking ground on the Calabasas project is the perfect way to kick off a transformational summer for the Cambria brand, which is on track to reach 50 open hotels by year end,” said Janis Cannon, senior vice president, upscale brands, Choice Hotels, in a statement. “We’re thrilled that Cambria’s western expansion is extending to a market like Calabasas — an in-demand, upscale destination with something to offer modern business travelers and tourists alike.”Choice currently has more than 40 Cambria hotels open across the nation, including sites in L.A., Chicago, Dallas, Nashville, New York, New Orleans, Phoenix and Washington, D.C.The Calabasas hotel will feature all of the brand hallmarks of the modern traveler-aimed boutique chain — an outdoor pool with mountain views, spa-style bathrooms with Bluetooth mirrors, open-air dining patio, onsite barista coffee bar and local craft beer on tap. For local business customers, it will have multi-function meeting space.“As a fourth-generation Angeleno, I focus my attention on projects that stand to serve as long-lasting benefits to local communities, and I’m excited to partner with Choice because I know they work in the same way,” Richard Weintraub said in a statement. “The hotel’s location has the best of both worlds: major businesses and access to some of the most beautiful beaches on the West Coast, all of which will offer an unmatched experience to future Cambria guests.”
