Run Raises Funds for the Disabled

Hundreds will gather at Anthony C. Beilenson Park in Lake Balboa this Sunday, Nov. 3 for the fifth annual Village Run/Walk/5K/10K event in support of nonprofit Valley Village, which provides programs for people with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families. Individuals can pledge $35 to participate in the 5K event and $50 for the 10K. The racecourse follows the Metro Orange line, looping around Lake Balboa. The 10K participants will run or walk the loop twice. “It’s a fun way for people to get involved and support the organization … and the clients we serve,” said Matthew Swearman, Valley Village’s senior director of development and donor relations. Last year’s run drew more than 300 attendees and raised just under $30,000. This year, Swearman said the nonprofit anticipates upwards of 400 attendees and roughly the same total in donations. “We’re just about even,” he said. All proceeds from the day’s event will fund Valley Village programs. The organization serves more than 400 developmentally disabled men and women in the San Fernando Valley with communications and arts classes, music therapy, motor and physical therapy, vocational skills training, as well as housing and support staff. Title sponsors for the run are Brown and Riding Insurance in Los Angeles and sneaker company Skechers, headquartered in Manhattan Beach, each of which pledged $5,000 or more. Other community sponsors include Outfront Media in L.A., which donated a banner valued at more than $5,000; Mike’s Roofing in Van Nuys; Galpin Motors in North Hills; Crunch Fitness, which has locations in Van Nuys, Chatsworth, Northridge and Burbank; Mountain Valley Spring Water in Downey; Arthur J. Gallagher Insurance in Woodland Hills; Providence Health Services, which has facilities in Tarzana and Woodland Hills; Wells Fargo; UCLA Health and L.A. Care; as well as Councilmember Bob Blumenfield. Once all the race participants cross the finish line, there will be a meditation cooldown led by sound bath artist Pamela Robins, followed by a medal ceremony.
