Westfield Postpones Reopening Malls in San Fernando Valley, Valencia

Westfield has indefinitely delayed the reopening of their malls in the San Fernando and Santa Clarita valleys, according to an announcement on the shopping center developer’s website. The delay affects the reopening of Westfield Topanga & The Village and Westfield Promenade in Woodland Hills, as well as Westfield Valencia Town Center in Santa Clarita — all of which were closed due to the coronavirus crisis. The company — a Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield subsidiary — wrote on its website that in the wake of looting and vandalism during protests of the May 25 death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, the company decided to postpone the mall openings, which were originally set for June 3. According to the Topanga Community Police Station, a Target attached to the Westfield Topanga mall was broken into during the protests, as well as the Nordstrom Rack across the street from the mall on Victory Boulevard. “For the welfare of our customers, employees and retail partners, we have delayed our planned reopening and will announce a new date in the coming days,” the Westfield website stated. The Business Journal reached out to a Westfield representative Friday but did not hear back by press time.
