Villaraigosa Addresses UCC

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa called upon more than 430 people in attendance at the United Chamber of Commerce’s First Annual Mayor’s Luncheon, encouraging the Valley’s business leaders to join in his effort to reform Los Angeles’ education system. Villaraigosa once again criticized school board members, administrators and unions for opposing measures like mayoral control of charter schools, vouchers and the movement toward smaller schools. He accused reform opponents of upholding the status quo in a flawed system. Education reform, he said, will be key to the city’s future as Los Angeles tries to rebuild its middle class while industries like manufacturing and aerospace are leaving. He added that the city needs to continue to find ways to invest in biotechnology and to expand the efficiency of its port and regional airports to allow for continued economic growth.
