Film Production on the Rise

Television and feature film production helped spur a first quarter increase over the same period last year, FilmLA reported on Monday. The agency responsible for the permitting process for production in Los Angeles said there was a 4.14 percent overall growth for the quarter ending March 31 for on-location film, television and commercial production. Feature film production increased to 2,386 permit days for the first quarter, compared with 2,190 permit days for the first quarter in 2005. Commercial production dropped by 140 permit days to 1,896 as compared to 2,044 permit days in the first three months of 2005. The big boost for the city came from television, specifically from reality television shows that saw a spike to 1,942 permit days for the first quarter as compared to 856 days in the same period in 2005. Overall, however, statistics compiled by the California Film Commission revealed boosts in film and television production in New York, Illinois, Louisiana and New Mexico. FilmLA Executive Director Steve McDonald said that the production going to other states raises the question of jobs and revenue the city is losing to those areas. “When you take into account that other regions are just beginning to develop a talent pool and long term infrastructure, L.A.’s modest growth is not that encouraging,” McDonald said.
