Easton Sports Closing Van Nuys Plant

Van Nuys sporting goods maker Easton Sports Inc. is moving its Valley manufacturing operations to China and eliminating as many as 250 local jobs. In a statement, Easton Vice President of Manufacturing Ken Waltrip said cuts were necessary for the company to stay ahead of competitors. “The sporting goods industry is a highly competitive one,” Waltrip said. “Over the years we have seen many of our longtime competitors move to Asia, and many other new competitors surface.” Published reports indicated 250 jobs would be cut, although the company would not specify an exact number. Employees will be provided with transitional benefits, Waltrip added. The company, which manufacturers softball, baseball, hockey and bicycling equipment, plans to keep its headquarters in the Valley.
