LAWA Ownership of Airport Land Questioned

Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael Antonovich has questioned whether Los Angeles World Airports can continue to own 17,000 acres of land in the Antelope Valley that had been the site of a proposed airport. A motion introduced Dec. 9 by Antonovich will have county officials study state law to see if LAWA can continue to own the land even if a permanent airfield does not become a reality, the Antelope Valley Press reported. LAWA, an agency of the City of Los Angeles, purchased the property in the late 1960s for an intercontinental airport and hub for supersonic passenger jets. What scheduled passenger service has come to Palmdale has used U.S. Air Force property rather than the LAWA land. The land remains mostly undeveloped desert, except for some property that has been leased to local farmers, the Desert Aire Golf Course and a few other uses, the Antelope Valley Press said.
