SAG Delays Strike Vote

The Screen Actors Guild has delayed a strike authorization vote by its membership to give the union’s national board time to discuss the matter. Actors had been scheduled to vote Jan. 2 on whether to stage a walkout against the major Hollywood studios. The guild has been without a contract since June 30. The SAG national board will meet Jan. 12 to “address the unfortunate division and restore consensus” in the union, the Los Angeles Times reported. Union leaders argue that a strike authorization will give the actors leverage in contract negotiations with the studios that have stalled for months, the Times reported. To pass, a strike authorization must be approved by 75% of members who vote. SAG and the studios represented by the Sherman Oaks-based Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers are at odds over how to compensate guild members whose work appears through downloads, online streaming and on mobile devices.
