Cause of Universal Studios Fire Remains Unknown

An investigation continues into the cause of a fire at Universal Studios that damaged film sets and exhibits on the studio tour. The fire broke out on the early morning of June 1 and lead to nearly 400 firefighters from multiple departments being called out to battle the blaze. The popular theme park and adjoining CityWalk shopping area are scheduled to be open on June 2. The Los Angeles Times quoted Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Mike Brown stating that it might take fire officials two or three days to determine what caused the fire and whether firefighters’ efforts were hampered by the park’s sprinkler system or low water pressure. Nine firefighters and a sheriff’s deputy were injured in the blaze, which was punctuated with 100-foot flames, early-morning explosions and then a second afternoon explosion as it consumed a cavernous video warehouse, the Times reported.
