More layoffs at Palmdale City Hall

A second round of staff cuts eliminated 39 employees at Palmdale City Hall. Drops in sales tax, building permit, and property tax revenue necessitated laying off 37-full-time employees and two part-timers across multiple city departments on March 26, the Antelope Valley Press reported. According to one of the former employees, rumors of layoffs had been spreading for the past week. “It was not unexpected,” the former employee said. “But nobody knew who it would be until it happened.” The city cut 11 workers in late February and is leaving 20 positions vacant. The overall savings from the cuts is about $3.7 million, the Antelope Valley Press said. As a cost savings, the city has also decided not to enter a float in the 2009 Tournament of Roses parade, the newspaper reported.
