Easton-Bell Sports Reports Drop in Income

Technology investments and reorganization costs contributed to sports equipment maker Easton-Bell Sports Inc. to posting a 7 percent drop in net income for third quarter. The Van Nuys-based company reported net income of $6.3 million on revenues of $203.4 million for the quarter ending Sept. 27. For the same period a year ago, the company had a net income of $6.8 million on revenues of $188.6 million. A breakdown of the numbers shows that various units of the company pulled sales to higher levels. Team Sports net sales increased $6.7 million for the third quarter of 2008, or 6.3 percent, versus the same quarter of 2007. Team Sports net sales increased due to strong growth in ice hockey equipment and modest growth in football equipment. The increase in Action Sports net sales was due to improved sales of cycling and snow helmets, cycling accessories and eyewear, the company said.
