Galleria Gala Raises $30,000 for Glendale Adventist

The Glendale Galleria and The Guild at Glendale Adventist Medical Center hosted a fundraising gala on Oct. 19 that raised $30,000 for Glendale Adventist Medical Center breast cancer and pediatric emergency services. The event drew 150 attendees and included a luncheon, a runway fall fashion show and a live auction. Prizes included a trip to Las Vegas, a $500 Chanel gift basket and a $250 shopping spree. Glendale-native Lawrence Zarian, also known as “The Fashion Guy,” was the guest emcee and event producer Dana Rosenberg lent her signature touch to the bash. Aerospace Funds Robotics James Monroe High School in North Hills received a $6,500 grant from Northrop Grumman to aid the School of Engineering and Design robotics program. The grant, said Lewis Chappelear, founder of the program, will be used to pay for competition registration and transportation, plus robot-building kits and supplies and equipment. For the past three years, students from Monroe have participated in personal development classes and taken tours of the Northrop Grumman’s Woodland Hills-based Navigation Systems Division facilities. “Northrop Grumman is committed to helping students in our community prepare themselves for technical careers,” said Jim Myers, sector vice president and general manager of Northrop Grumman’s Navigation System Division. “Both our future and the future of the defense industry depend on well-educated students with strong technical backgrounds.” Regency Sponsors Wheelchairs Regency Lighting, a national lighting distributor based in Van Nuys, has made a financial grant of an undisclosed amount to Joni and Friends, an international disabilities charity. The funds will be used to purchase manufacturing equipment to build pediatric wheelchairs that will be given to disabled and underprivileged children in developing countries. The Regency Chairs will be built at Taft Correctional Facility where 40 prisoners will work with the Wheels for the World program. After a visit to Taft and meeting with the inmates who will be crafting the wheelchairs, Ron Regenstreif, CEO of Regency Lighting and board member of Joni and Friends, said, “They were tremendously grateful to do something so significant. It really gives them a purpose where there is typically not much meaning in their lives.” Further, the prisoners will also be learning a trade they can put to use upon their release. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone,” said Regenstreif. Healthier Boys & Girls A $10,000 donation from the Kaiser Permanente Community Service Fund to the Boys & Girls Club of the West Valley will help the Club implement Triple Play, a health, fitness and wellness program. Kaiser Permanente has been a regular donor to the Club years, having also provided funding for a drug and alcohol awareness and resistance program among other initiatives. “Triple Play represents a major expansion in our Club culture. We will be empowering youth to develop a healthier lifestyle by increasing their knowledge of and participation in healthy habits, daily exercise, good nutrition and positive social interactions with others,” said Club President and CEO Jan Sobel. “We are grateful to Kaiser Permanente for their donation to further our efforts.” Flights for Special Kids On Oct. 18, Whiteman Airport in Pacoima was the site of the second annual Challenge Air for Kids and Friends event. Event organizer Lonna Gibson, west coast director for the national organization, said that 116 special needs kids were given free plane rides by 22 volunteer pilots. Shop for Casa Pacifica Paseo Marketplace retailer Siren on the Boulevard will be donating hundreds of designer boots and shoes to support Casa Pacifica . On Nov. 15, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., shoppers can purchase footwear that would normally retail for as much as $500 for just $15 for shoes and $20 for boots. The store is located at 3699 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd. in Thousand Oaks. Casa Pacific serves abused, neglected and severaly emotionally disturbed children at its 23-acre Camarillo campus.
