SAG Negotiators Seek Strike Authorization

The negotiating committee of the Screen Actors Guild has recommended the union’s governing board authorize a strike vote to get stalled contracts talks with the major Hollywood studios moving again. The resolution passed Oct. 1 encourages the guild membership to vote for a strike and for the governing board to start an educational campaign advocating a yes vote for a strike authorization. The actors union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers have not sat down with each other since the contract expired on June 30. The two sides are at odds over jurisdiction and residuals from distribution of television programming and films through online streaming, downloads, and distribution to mobile devices. In its response, the Alliance said that SAG negotiators are unrealistic to think they will get better contract terms than those approved by the Writers Guild of America, the Directors Guild of America, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, a smaller union representing actors. “This is the harsh economic reality, and no strike will change that reality,” the Alliance statement said.
