Valley Presbyterian Cuts 35 Staffers

A drop in Medi-Cal payments led Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys to eliminate 35 staffers although none in their nursing staff. The employees dismissed were full time and served in non-clinical and support functions, said hospital spokeswoman Norma O’Flaherty. No nurses were affected by the cuts and the hospital is still actively recruiting nurses and engaging in nurse training with Los Angeles Valley College, O’Flaherty said. Valley Presbyterian made the layoffs in the wake of Medi-Cal payments being cut by 10 percent because of state budget cuts. “The budget for the following year has been cut by $2.2 million,” O’Flaherty said. “We were taking in that information and rebalancing the hospital to be able to effectively still provide quality health care to our community.” The hospital doesn’t anticipate making another round of layoffs, she added.
