Governor Signs Bill to Pay Teachers More

New and existing mathematics, science and special education teachers will be paid more now that Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into the law the use of state grant funds for their salaries. Schwarzenegger’s action authorizes school district to use Professional Development Block Grant monies for those three teaching categories because they are in demand. “California faces a shortage of qualified teachers in the areas of math, science and special education,” Gov. Schwarzenegger said. “It is important that we provide flexibility to local school districts so they can develop innovative recruitment strategies, specifically around compensation, to help attract more individuals to this profession.” Teachers’ unions would also have input on the new pay for the teachers.
