The Trends / The Pacesetter

In an effort to properly categorize the number of technology companies in the San Fernando Valley area, the Business Journal has created its first ever Internet-based Firms List. To qualify for the list, companies must have a product or service that uses the Internet exclusively, or could not function without the Internet. We tried to include as many companies as possible that fit the criteria from Valueclick, an online advertising giant, to Cloudworks, a cloud storage provider, to even ecommerce sites such as JtecDirect. Out of the 22 companies that responded only 10 were willing to disclose revenue numbers, which is likely due to the number of private start-up companies on the list. By Brian DeWolf Westlake Village-based ValueClick, Inc., a global online services company that enables advertisers to sell products online, tops this year’s Internet-Based Firms List with over $600 million in revenue. With over 168 employees in the valley and over 1,000 worldwide, it was the only company that responded with multiple locations in the San Fernando Valley. What started out as an advertising division of website optimization company Web-Ignite in 1998 soon established itself as the go-to provider for pay-per-click online advertising. By late 2000 and early 2001 the company was already opening international offices in Paris and Munich, as well as acquiring other technology companies. Since then, they’ve been busy expanding their business, acquiring competitors in the space, and increasing the options that online advertisers and publishers rely upon everyday.
