Accountants Loyal to Firms as Layoffs Fail to Materialize

Accountants, largely spared from the waves of layoffs that have hit other professionals such as lawyers, expressed a high level of loyalty to the companies for which they currently work, according to a recent survey. The survey, conducted by Ajilon Finance, a finance- and accounting-recruitment firm, in conjunction with the Institute of Management Accountants, found just a 2 percent loss of jobs in accounting since June, 2008. Perhaps as a result, 57 percent of accountants surveyed said they feel loyal to their current employers, and that they plan to stay with their companies once the economy improves. At the same time, more than one-fifth (23 percent), of the 458 accountants surveyed said they plan to look for new jobs when the economy rebounds, according to the survey. Still, 44 percent see themselves in a more senior role at their current companies in five years, while only 25 percent think they will be elsewhere. Thom Senzee
