VIA Organizes Trade Show to Highlight Local Suppliers

Recognizing that time and money are scarce resources for small businesses, especially in the current economic climate, the Valley Industry and Commerce Association of Santa Clarita offered a venue for local suppliers to forge business relationships and make connections at the Business to Business Expo held June10-11. One of the largest trade shows of its kind in Santa Clarita, VIA’s B2B event featured about 80 exhibitors at the Valencia Industrial Center. “Specifically in this economic climate, this was really an important year to do this event,” said Kathy Norris,” VIA president and chief executive officer. “We’ve watched so many businesses that are struggling, and putting this event together allowed us to make those connections again so that we can keep those businesses healthy.” The event kicked off with an invitation only CEO reception, which offered a networking opportunity for senior executives. An indoor exhibition allowed VIA members an affordable way to showcase their business in front of buyers looking for local sources, said Norris. During the showcase, a select number of senior executives from large companies in the Santa Clarita Valley were available for one-on-one 15 minute meetings with exhibitors in a designated “Backstage Connections” area. “This provided exhibitors a direct opportunity to offer their products and services to about 20 businesses including Ultra Violet Devices, Newhall Land, Advanced Bionics and Six Flags Magic Mountain,” Norris said. The event also offered a variety of educational seminars addressing issues such as the benefits of taking advantage of Santa Clarita’s Enterprise Zone to “virtually eliminate” California State income tax, and the risks associated with terminating employees during the turbulent economy. Another seminar sought to educate participants on environmental practices including recycling and source reduction techniques.
