New “Green” Academic Building to Break Ground at CLU

A new $8.5 million social and behavioral science building breaks ground next month on the California Lutheran University campus. The Swenson Center for Academic Excellence will be the Thousand Oaks-based school’s first LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) building. The lobby will be cooled using natural ventilation rather than air-conditioning. The building was designed to take advantage of natural airflow, with dampers opening automatically in the morning to bring in cool air and close when sensors detect the outside air is too warm. Natural light will provide most of the illumination in corridors and offices. The Swenson Center breaks ground June 4 and is slated for completion by August 2010 as part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebration. Andrea Alegria
