Financial performance figures for publically traded companies in the region flowed in as the quarterly reporting season kicked off this week. The results are a mixed bag of profits and losses, as well as growth and contraction. Following is the Business Journal’s roundup of quarterly earnings reports with year-over-year comparisons for selected firms. Easton-Bell Sports, Inc. (EBS): For the third fiscal quarter, ended Oct. 3, the company had net income of $6.29 million on revenues of $180.4 million. For the same period a year ago, the company reported net income of 6.34 million on revenues of $203.4 million. United Online, Inc. (Nasdaq: UNTD): For the third quarter ended Sept. 30, the company had operating income of $32.7 million on revenues of $216.2 million. For the same period a year ago, the company reported operating income of $28.8 million on revenues of $169.2 million. On Assignment, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASGN): For the third fiscal quarter ended Sept. 30, the firm reported net income of $1.5 million, or $0.04 per diluted share, on revenues of $98.1 million. By comparison, On Assignment’s 2008 Q3 net income was $6.9 million, or $0.19 per share on revenues of $161.9 million. Ixia (Nasdaq: XXIA): Financial results for the third quarter ended Sept. 30 for Ixia were a net loss of $6.2 million, or $0.10 per share, on revenues of $46.4 million. For the same period in 2008, the company reported net income of $483,000, or $0.01 per diluted share, on revenues of $47.3 million. The Ryland Group, Inc. (NYSE: RYL): For its third quarter ending Sept. 30, The Ryland Group recorded a net loss of $52.48 million, or $1.20 per diluted share, on revenues of $327.8 million. For the same period a year ago, the company reported a net loss $65.7 million, or $1.54 per diluted share, on revenues of $543.8 million. Cheesecake Factory Inc. (NASDAQ: CAKE): reported financial results for the third quarter of fiscal 2009 which ended Sept. 29 that included net income of $16.3 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, on revenues of $400.6 million. For the third quarter in 2008 the restaurant chain reported net income of $11.8 million, or $0.19 per diluted share, on revenues of $405.1 million. Power-One, Inc. (NASDAQ: PWER): for the third quarter ended Sept. 27, Power-One had a net loss of $2 million, or $0.03 per diluted share, on revenues of $100.1 million. For the same period a year ago, the company reported a net loss of $1.7 million, or $0.03 per diluted share, on revenues of $140.1 million. Crown Media Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:CRWN): The Studio City-based owner and operator of the Hallmark Channel and the Hallmark Movie Channel posted a loss of $10.2 million, or $0.02 per diluted share, on revenues of $62.8 million for the period ending Sept. 30. For the same period in 2008, the media company had a net loss of $17.9 million, or $0.17 per diluted share, on revenues of $64.5 million. K•Swiss Inc. (NASDAQ: KSWS): Results for the third quarter ended Sept. 30 showed a net loss of $2.9 million or $0.08 per diluted share, on $70.6 million in revenues. That compares with a profit of $1.1 million or $0.03 per diluted share on revenues of $92.6 million in Q3 2008. K-Swiss’ sale of Royal Elastics on April 30, is accounted for in the company’s earnings report for the third quarter of its current fiscal year. THQ Inc. (NASDAQ: THQI): The Agoura Hills-based company reported a net loss of $5.6 million, or $0.08 per diluted share, on revenues of $101.3 million for the quarter ending Sept. 30. For the same period a year ago, THQ had a net loss of $115.3 million, or $1.73 per share, on revenues of $164.8 million. PS Business Parks, Inc. (NYSE:PSB): Glendale-based PS Business Parks reported net income was $8.8 million, or $0.39 per diluted share, on revenues of $67.7 million for the third quarter ending Sept. 30. For the same period a year ago the company reported net income of $5.3 million, or $0.26 per diluted share, on revenues of $71.6 million.
