State Bar Seeks Applicants for Two Top Jobs

The State Bar of California is reaching out to attorneys across the Golden State with news of two high-profile job openings, as the organization seeks to fill the positions of chief trial counsel and general counsel. The bar’s chief trial counsel is responsible for the association’s Disciplinary Enforcement Division, which investigates complaints against attorneys and prosecutes cases of professional misconduct. The chief is appointed by the State Bar’s Board of Governors to a four-year term and must be confirmed by the State Senate Rules Committee. The position is located in the State Bar’s Los Angeles office. The application deadline is September 25. Numerous prequalifying requirements, including a minimum of five years (preferably 10) “progressively responsible active experience in the practice of law, including substantial trial experience, with such law practice in broad areas of the law a minimum two years, (preferably five) prosecutorial or similar experience in administrative agency proceedings or disciplinary agencies (and,) a minimum two years, (preferably five) management/supervisory experience in administering personnel and budget requirements.” The general counsel serves as the principal legal adviser to the Board of Governors and the State Bar entity and manages a staff, which provides the bar with legal representation and advice in litigation, public contracting, administrative compliance, labor and employment, intellectual property, real property matters and on a wide range of other issues confronting a public entity. That position is located in the State Bar’s San Francisco office. The general counsel application deadline is October 9.
