IHOP Offering Free Pancakes for Stories of Good Acts

This is a regular feature on philanthropic activities by Valley-area businesspeople and companies. Funds For Children’s Hospitals IHOP will be holding its annual free pancake giveaway fundraiser to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and to celebrate National Pancake Day, the Glendale-based restaurant chain announced. IHOP’s national online contest “Stacks for Good Acts” invites good Samaritans to submit stories of 250 words or less about good deeds they or someone they know performed in 2010. The stories can be submitted at IHOPPancakeDay.com. Entries will be judged on emotional impact, originality and entertainment value. The grand prize winner will receive free pancakes for a year. The winner will be announced on National Pancake Day on March 1. On that day, IHOP restaurants will also give guests a free short stack of its signature buttermilk pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. In return, IHOP will ask for voluntary donations to support Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and other local charities. Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals’ “Miracle Balloons,” available from Feb. 1 through March 1, will also be sold at participating IHOP restaurants for $1 and $5. $1 Million for Providence Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center received $1 million for its new Hycy and Howard Hill Neuroscience Institute, the Burbank-based hospital announced. The donation to the Providence Saint Joseph Foundation comes from the Cusumano family, which runs the Cusumano Real Estate Group in Burbank. The family earmarked the funds for high-tech diagnostic equipment. In recognition of the gift, the institute’s neurodiagnostic center will be named after the Cusumanos. The family is particularly interested in funding a biplane angiography suite where a neurovascular X-ray system will provide sharp three-dimensional images for interventional procedures. “There is no question it will save lives,” said Barry A. Wolfman, chief executive for the hospital. “The neuroscience field is advancing rapidly, and thanks to donors like the Cusumanos, Providence Saint Joseph will continue to be on the cutting edge of healthcare technology in the San Fernando Valley.” Sexy Hair Launches Contest Sexy Hair Concepts LLC is holding a contest for sororities to highlight their philanthropic efforts and to donate funds to nonprofits, the Chatsworth-based hair product manufacturer announced. The Caring is Sexy sorority contest launched Feb. 1, with contest entries lasting until March 15. Sorority chapters can enter the contest by submitting photos and descriptions of their philanthropic efforts, demonstrating why they think caring is “sexy” and why they should win. For each submission, Sexy Hair will donate $10 – up to $10,000 total – to its non-profit partner Look Good…Feel Better. The non-profit helps patients struggling with the appearance-related challenges of cancer treatment. Five sorority chapters will be named finalists, and each will receive Sexy Hair products and Flip video camera to record a five-minute video entry demonstrating why they should be chosen to represent the company’s Caring is Sexy sorority. A judging panel and an online “people’s choice” vote – to be tabulated through the company’s Web site – will determine the winner of the contest. The winning sorority chapter will receive $1,000 to be donated to the charity of its choice, a hairstyle makeover event by Sexy Hair master artists and Sexy Hair product for the entire chapter. – Compiled by Jessica Vernabe
