Disney Viewers Raise $16.8 Million for Hurricane Relief

Walt Disney Co. raised more than $16.8 million Monday when its broadcast properties hosted a “Day of Giving” to aid American Red Cross efforts following Hurricane Sandy. The “Day of Giving” campaign was promoted on several ABC and Disney broadcast networks and television shows, including “Good Morning America,” “The View,” “Dancing with the Stars,” Radio Disney, ESPN and ABC Family. The money was pledged by viewers. “We are deeply thankful that we were able to mobilize thousands of donations from Disney/ABC’s viewers to help so many in need,” Peggy Dyer, chief marketing officer for Red Cross, said in a statement. The fundraising campaign followed a $2 million corporate donation from Disney to the hurricane relief effort last week. Half of that amount went to the Red Cross, with the remainder going to organizations focused on reconstruction.
