Organic Snacks Now with Bugs

There’s natural and then, well, there’s Crunchies. The snacks are organic, Kosher, grown from non-genetically modified seeds – and contain no sugar, salt or additives. In fact, their only ingredient is a freeze-dried piece of fruit or vegetable – minus most of the water, hence the crunch. Sounds great for mom, but how do you sell that to a picky kid? Manufacturer Crunchies Food Company LLC is trying a time-tested technique. This summer it will release a new line of freeze-dried snacks that will take the shape of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and other Looney Tunes characters. The Westlake Village company has entered into a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc., whose Looney Tunes characters grace everything from T-shirts to lunch boxes to sippy cups. “We look at the kids market as a major opportunity,” said Crunchies Chief Executive James Casey. “This will add fun as an ingredient to healthy snacking for kids.” The new Little Crunchies offering will include four different flavors, including strawberry and banana, apple and banana and strawberries and mango. The 1-ounce bags will sell for about $5. Darren Tristano, executive vice president at Chicago food industry research firm Technomic Inc., said parental spending is heavily influenced by children. “This will help the two sides meet in the middle,” he said. “The all-natural part will appeal to the moms and the Looney Tunes part will appeal to the kids.” Crunchies was founded in 2006 and its products are available at Ralphs, Vons, Walmart and other outlets. Casey said the company has grown significantly and he expects the Little Crunchies line to fuel more growth. “We ended up in the right place at the right time,” he said. – Elliot Golan
