Cities in the greater San Fernando Valley reported higher unemployment rates in June as schools let out for summer and cut their payrolls. The increase in the Valley followed the trend for Los Angeles County. The countywide seasonally adjusted unemployment rate grew to 9.7 percent in June, a slight uptick from 9.6 percent in May. In the greater Valley, Lancaster reported the highest unemployment at 14.4 percent, a significant jump from 13.1 percent the previous month. Neighboring Palmdale came in with 12.7 percent, up from 11.5 percent the previous month. In other cities, Glendale had 8.9 percent in June (up from 8.0 percent in May), Burbank had 8.3 percent (up from 7.5 percent) and Santa Clarita 6.2 percent (up from 5.6 percent). The largest city in the region, Los Angeles, reported unemployment of 11.3 percent in June, up from 10.2 percent the previous month. In L.A. County, education was the largest loser, shedding 7,800 jobs. The information sector was next with a loss of 5,000 jobs. The county actually gained 21,000 jobs during the month, but the labor force grew by 28,000 people, resulting in a lower percentage of people employed. Nationally, unemployment held steady in June at 7.6 percent, while it decreased slightly in California to 8.5 percent, compared to 8.6 percent the previous month.
