Glendale Program to Help Businesses Post-Disaster

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. is the first company to be part of a new program from the city of Glendale designed to get businesses up and running quickly following an earthquake or other natural disasters. The Back to Business Program, or B2B, will have the engineering firm Structural Focus in Gardena pre-certify buildings and campuses prior to a disaster to expedite the inspection process following a natural disaster. The pre-certification allows Structural Focus to inspect the DreamWorks Animation campus following a natural disaster rather than city staff. The studio picks up the cost of any inspections. DreamWorks Animation has nine buildings on its six-acre campus and employs about 1,400 people. As part of the program, the studio developed an advanced emergency plan for the safety of its employees and continuity of business, said Matt Bogaard, head of corporate security. “As a result of this partnership with Glendale, we can move back into our buildings as quickly as possible following an evacuation and resume campus operations,” Bogaard said in a prepared statement. The city is looking for other businesses to join B2B, which is a way for Glendale to offer post-disaster support without requiring additional city resources or relying on neighboring cities, said Stuart Tom, the city’s chief building official.
