Power-One Loses Patent Infringement Appeal

Camarillo manufacturer Power-One Inc. has lost its bid to dismiss a patent infringement judgment that is expected to cost it at least $25 million. SynQor Inc., of Boxborough, Mass., sued Power-One and 10 other companies in 2010 over high-efficiency DC-AC converter systems used to power computer systems and telecommunication equipment. SynQor won its suit in 2010 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas, and was awarded a collective judgment of $95 million. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington D.C. upheld the judgment on Wednesday, and assessed additional damages. The appeals’ court said the new damages stemmed from the defendants continued sale of the contested converters. When the decision was handed down in 2010, Power-One told Reuters that its share of the cost was expected to be $25.6 million, which would not have a large impact on the company’s bottom line. It’s unclear what Power-One’s share of the larger judgment will be. Shares of Power-One lost 1 cent to close at $4.34 on the Nasdaq.
