Airport Curfew Law Reintroduced

Two San Fernando Valley lawmakers have reintroduced a bill on Wednesday to allow Van Nuys Airport and Burbank Bob Hope Airport to adopt mandatory nighttime curfews on flights. The bill from Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Burbank, and Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks, would exempt the two Valley airfields from federal regulations on when flights can depart and arrive. The Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act was tried once before in 2011 but failed to get enough votes to pass. Both Van Nuys and Bob Hope have voluntary curfews restricting flights between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. The Noise Relief Act can make the curfews mandatory and give residents relief from noise of late night and early morning air traffic, Schiff said. “Valley residents living under the flight paths and in close proximity to the terminals have had to put up with this sleep-disruptive noise for many years, and it is time to provide relief,” Schiff said in a statement. “We hope to build on last year’s bipartisan support for the measure in the House, and push for passage.” In 2009, Bob Hope went through an application process with the Federal Aviation Administration to get the curfew but was turned down by the agency. The Valley-Wide Noise Relief Act has the backing of the City of Burbank and the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority, owner and operator of Bob Hope Airport.
