NBC, Virgin Galactic Sign Up for ‘Space Race’

NBC Entertainment has signed an exclusive deal to develop a reality show featuring contestants competing to take a sub-orbital flight aboard Virgin Galactic’s SpaceShipTwo space vehicle. “Space Race” is a joint production of Burbank-based NBC Entertainment, Virgin Galactic and One Three Media, the Santa Monica production company of Emmy Award-winning producer Mark Burnett. Virgin Galactic is building and testing its space vehicles at the Mojave Air & Space Port in Mojave. Commercial flights will originate from Spaceport America in New Mexico. The mission of Virgin Galactic is to make commercial space travel affordable and accessible to all and the reality show fits in with that goal, said Sir Richard Branson, founder of Virgin Galactic. “‘Space Race’ allows us to extend this opportunity of a lifetime to as many people as possible right at the start of our commercial service – through direct experience and television viewing,” Branson said in a prepared statement. One Three Media will offer distribution of “Space Race” this month at the MIPCOM TV market in Cannes.
