Amgen Inc. announced plans to open a research and development facility at ShanghaiTech University in China. The Thousand Oaks biopharmaceutical giant has entered into an agreement with the Shanghai school for the advancement of biopharmaceutical discovery and translational research in China. Sean Harper, executive vice president of research and development at Amgen, said the move will help both sides advance biopharmaceutical research. “Expansion into China is a business priority for Amgen and opening this R&D center is another clear and important step forward in Amgen’s commitment to the China market,” he said in a prepared statement. Amgen expects its China R&D center will be fully operational sometime next year. Shares lost $2.30, or 2 percent, to close Wednesday at $112.48 on the Nasdaq.
