Online Shoe Site Steps Into Galleria

When e-commerce darling JustFab opened its first brick-and-mortar store earlier this month, it was a major coup for the Glendale Galleria – that came after a year in talks. Adam Goldenberg, co-chief executive at the El Segundo-based JustFab, said the company looked at several factors when choosing the location. “We wanted to make sure our flagship was located at a top-tier mall, in a location inside the mall with great foot traffic, and in a city where we had a large concentration of JustFab members and within driving distance of our corporate headquarters,” he said. The 3,000 square-foot store sells footwear, denim and handbags, and plans to add jewelry next month. Members pay $39.95 for most items – a merchandising technique developed on the website – while non-members pay full retail price. The company has more than 320,000 members within a 25-mile radius of the Glendale Galleria. Laurence Martin, general manager of the mall, owned by General Growth Properties Inc. of Chicago, said talks with the retailer have gone on for about a year. He declined to comment on the financial details or terms of the lease. “We consistently look for retailers who appeal to our shopper demographics and complement and enhance our existing tenant mix,” Martin said. “Stores like JustFab add flare and dimension to our current retail roster.” This isn’t the first time the mall has scored such a triumph. It also was the site of the first Apple store in 2001 and the first Disney Store in 1987. The mall is going through a major makeover that includes an upgrade to its exterior, as well as the opening of a Bloomingdale’s at the former site of a Mervyns. – Jacquelinne Mejia
