Nestle USA Signs Animal Pledge

Nestle USA pledged on Thursday to improve the welfare of the farm animals in its supply chain by implementing stricter standards on its 7,300 suppliers. The Glendale-based division of Swiss food giant Nestle S.A. said it had entered a partnership with NGO World Animal Protection in London. Protections under the agreement include improved and standardized spacing for the rearing pens of pigs, cows and other species, and a commitment to minimize pain for farm animals. “We know that our consumers care about the welfare of farm animals and we, as a company, are committed to ensuring the highest possible levels of farm animal welfare across our global supply chain,” said Benjamin Ware, the company’s manager of responsible sourcing, in a statement. According to Nestle, the company’s Responsible Sourcing Guidelines will affect hundreds of thousands of farms around the world, since most of its 7,300 suppliers of dairy, meat, poultry and eggs also buy from others. Nestle’s announcement comes two days after four people were indicted in the February recall of 8.7 million pounds of contaminated beef. The incident with Rancho Feeding Corp. in Petaluma caused Nestle USA to recall two versions of its Hot Pockets in February in 139 locations after using a “small quantity of meat” at the production operation coming from Rancho Feeding Corp. World Animal Protection has worked with governments, communities and international agencies for the last 50 years to improve animal welfare.
