Light Rail Bill Moves Forward

The California Assembly Transportation Committee has approved a bill that can pave the way for light rail in one section of the San Fernando Valley. The bill sponsored by Assemblymember Adrin Nazarian, D-Van Nuys, would repeal legislation from 1991 that banned light rail in the Valley and limited transit projects to a subway or a dedicated bus way such as the Orange Line operated by the L.A. County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. If approved by the full Assembly and signed into law, the bill would allow Metro to consider light rail along a 3.5 mile section of the Orange Line between North Hollywood and Hazeltine Avenue in Van Nuys. The bill is backed by the Valley Industry & Commerce Association, which said that improved transit creates a better business climate for employers, commuters and residents. It passed the Transportation Committee on Monday. “It’s high time that this outdated legislation be repealed so that the Valley can create transportation infrastructure that is on par with the rest of the region,” said VICA President Stuart Waldman, in a prepared statement.
