DreamWorks to Release Feline Fashion

DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc. has got itself a wonderful, wonderful cat. The Glendale animation studio is now the owner of Felix the Cat, the cartoon feline whose appearances in animated shorts dates back to the 1920s and in printed comics since the 1950s. The studio will use Felix in a fashion line, DreamWorks Animation Chief Executive Jeffrey Katzenberg said during a Tuesday speech at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. “Felix really goes beyond evergreen status and rises to something even more uncommon, as he is a true icon,” said Katzenberg, who was quoted in the L.A. Times. “We plan to make him one of the most desired fashion brands in the world.” DreamWorks bought Felix for an undisclosed sum from Felix the Cat Productions in Hamburg, New Jersey. Shares rose 24 cents, or nearly a point, to $24.97 on the Nasdaq.
