Briefs: IPC, Simulations Plus

IPC The Hospitalist Co. Inc. has named John Cassin as executive director of its Colorado region. The North Hollywood company, which manages hospital-based doctor groups, said Cassin will be responsible for operational supervision, which includes ensuring doctors are aligned with the operational goals of the hospitals. Cassin is the former regional vice president of operations for Sound Physicians, a group of hospitalist doctors based in Tacoma, Wash. Previously, he was chief executive at Vail Valley Medical Center and vice president of strategic development and managed care for the University of Colorado Hospital. “With John’s expertise and depth of knowledge of the Colorado health care market, we anticipate expanding our practice deeper throughout the region,” said Glenn Appelbaum, IPC’s senior vice president for operations, said in a statement. Shares closed down 75 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $50.58 on the Nasdaq. Simulations Plus Inc. has signed a five-year research collaboration with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for work on test-tube experiments by drug researchers. The Lancaster company, which develops software that simulates drug reactions, will provide licenses for the company’s programs to the FDA’s Office of Testing and Research. The company also will provide training to FDA investigators regarding the underlying mathematical models. The plan is to make results from the research available to the public. Shares rose 4 cents, or a fraction of a percent, to $5.74 on the Nasdaq.
