Valley Groups Join Hotel Boycott

A handful of San Fernando Valley organizations are joining the list of local businesses boycotting the Beverly Hills Hotel and others owned by the sultanate of Brunei. Partners in Care Foundation in San Fernando, the Los Angeles Jewish Home in Reseda and the Motion Picture & Television Fund in Woodland Hills each cancelled events at the hotel in protest of the harsh new codes for homosexuality and adultery put in place last week by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah. Partners in Care is relocating its Vision and Excellence in Healthcare Leadership Tribute Dinner to the Beverly Hilton Hotel after holding the annual fundraiser at the Beverly Hills Hotel for the past six years. “While this action will have a negative financial impact on our nonprofit operations over the coming year, we are called by conscience and solidarity to take this drastic action,” said Chief Executive June Simmons and Board Chairman Steve O’Dell in a joint statement. The Los Angeles Jewish Home moved its Legacy Circle Luncheon to the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, while the Motion Picture & Television Fund said it will no longer hold its Night Before the Oscars party at the Beverly Hills Hotel. The Beverly Hills Hotel, along with the Hotel Bel-Air, are part of the Dorchester Collection of hotels, which is based in London and includes the famed Dorchester hotel, as well as lodgings in Rome, Paris, Milan and Ascot, England. Locally, the Beverly Hills Hotel is a leading venue for businesses and non-profit groups. In a meeting Tuesday, the Beverly Hills City Council urged the sultanate to sell his hotel chain or denounce the recently imposed Sharia laws that call for brutal penalties – including the stoning to death of gay men and women or adulterers, and the flogging of women for having abortions. The Hollywood Reporter, the Feminist Majority Foundation, Virgin Group, celebrities such as Jay Leno and Ellen DeGeneres have joined the Dorchester boycott. Mayor Eric Garcetti also has said he will not patronize the hotels.
