AeroVironment Inc. got a $3.4 million contract Thursday from the U.S. Army to supply its Raven unmanned aircraft to Spain. The Monrovia company is supplying the aircraft to the Spanish Ministry of Defense through the foreign military sales program, in which the purchaser does not deal directly with the company supplying the product. AeroVironment designs, builds and tests the Raven and other unmanned aircraft, or drones, in Simi Valley. To date, it has delivered more than 25,000 of its drones to customers worldwide for use in surveillance, intelligence and reconnaissance missions. “Our small UAS deliver powerful insight, on-demand for valuable, real-time situational awareness – whenever and wherever needed – that helps military personnel operate more safely and effectively,” Kirk Flittie, vice president and general manager of the company’s unmanned aircraft systems business segment, said in a prepared statement. The Raven is a hand-launched aircraft with a wingspan of 4-1/2 feet and weight of 4.2 pounds that has a range of up to 6.2 miles. Shares closed down 92 cents, or more than 3 percent, to $24.53 on the Nasdaq.
