Disney, DreamWorks Receive Animation Nominations

“Big Hero 6” from Walt Disney Animation Studios earned five nominations on Tuesday from the Visual Effects Society, including Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture. The Burbank animation studio will go up against “How to Train Your Dragon 2” from DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc., in Glendale, which earned four nominations in the society’s 13th annual awards. The Sherman Oaks professional society presents awards in 23 categories, including work done for characters and environments in live-action and animated films, television series, commercials and video games. There will be a Feb. 4 awards show at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. In the live-action categories, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” lead with five nominations, with “The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies,” distributed by Warner Bros. Entertainment, in Burbank, and “Interstellar,” co-financed by Warner Bros., each receiving four nominations. All three were nominated in the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture category – considered to be the equivalent of the Best Visual Effects category at the Academy Awards. Nine of 12 winners in the Outstanding Visual Effect category went on to win an Oscar. “Visual effects in and by themselves are nothing unless they serve the story,’” said Visual Effects Society Chairman Jeffrey A. Okun. “This year, more than ever, we are seeing amazing work that not only serves the story but tells the story in a manner never before seen.”
