SPECIAL REPORT: Work Hard, Play Hard is Motto at Glendale Outfit

Partner in Charge, Hutchinson and Bloodgood LLP, Glendale Years at firm: 10 Residence: Glendale How has accounting changed during your career? Technology has played a major role in the accounting field. I started my career with the very first desktop PC. From that technology to today’s virtual world and cloud computing, it’s completely changed the processing side of the business. We are now able to work with clients across the globe never leaving our desks, and we can access data from a variety of devices and locations. What is tax time like at your firm? We definitely work hard and the hours are longer – but we try to continue to have a life during tax season. Our tax and audit groups are always busy, but during “prime time” as we call it, we are that much busier. That said, we have a positive atmosphere here. We try to keep the mood light with team member games and contests. We frequently bring in lunch and host other events so that we can have fun and socialize. What is your firm’s primary specialty? We offer traditional accounting services and a wide range of specialty services focused in certain industries: Financial institutions, hospitality and leisure (including private clubs), franchising, real estate, construction, agriculture, technology, law firms, non-profit organizations and employee benefit plans. How did your firm establish its specialty? The firm was founded in Glendale in 1922, and has grown to four California offices – Glendale, San Diego, El Centro and Watsonville. We have a team of 35 partners and over 130 team members with diverse backgrounds and expertise. They have dedicated their careers to understanding and servicing their clients. Who are your typical clients? As with our broad base of industries served, we also have a broad base of valued clients each with their own goals and challenges. Our client base is primarily comprised of closely held entities large and small. Has your firm expanded beyond traditional accounting services? Yes. Our clients think of us as their trusted business advisors and to that end we provide niche services that complement our traditional accounting and tax services. We have service areas in business valuation, international tax, recruiting services, cost segregation studies, IT assurance and consulting engagements. Does the firm have additional expansion plans? We are always looking to grow and expand if the right situation presents itself. How do you recruit new partners? We believe in promoting from within although we do look for partners outside of the firm to join our team when the fit is right. Oftentimes, it is someone that is familiar and we have worked with who has a great reputation. Anytime we consider an addition to the firm, it is vital that it be a good fit for both sides. How do you recruit young accountants? Referrals are a great way to discover new talent, so we encourage team members to actively participate. Great people refer great people. We also attend job fairs on college campuses and make sure we have a presence in the community. What was the worst day of your career? One thing about our profession is that every day brings something new. So you take the good and the bad. I work to make the best of a bad situation and turn it into something positive. What was the best day of your career? Looking back, I would have to say that passing the CPA exam at the time was a great personal accomplishment. Is there something your colleagues don’t know about you? I am an avid cyclist and enjoy the outdoors. I believe a healthy body promotes a healthy mind. What career advice do you like to give? Be passionate about what you do and surround yourself with great people. Great things will happen! – Karen E. Klein
