Disney CEO Will Chair NFL Joint Venture

Walt Disney Co. Chief Executive Bob Iger was named Wednesday as the non-executive chairman of a joint venture between two NFL teams interested in moving to Los Angeles. Media reports stated that Iger would become chairman of Carson Holdings LLC, a venture between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders. In the post, he will be responsible for working with the city of Carson on a proposed football stadium there and handle the hiring of a president for the joint venture. Iger will serve as non-executive chairman for five years with annual compensation of $1. He remains as head of Disney. After he leaves the Burbank entertainment and media giant, Iger has the option of becoming a minority investor in either the Raiders or Chargers. Iger’s appointment coincides with the two California football teams, as well as the St. Louis Rams, submitting proposals about their futures to an NFL committee. The owner of the Rams is proposing to move his team to a new stadium to be constructed in Inglewood. If the league approves the moves of the Chargers and Raiders, they will play in a stadium worthy of their fans, Iger said. “L.A. football fans will enjoy unprecedented access to games during the season, in a state-of-the-art stadium designed to deliver the most entertaining, exciting and enjoyable experience possible,” Iger said in a prepared statement. Disney shares closed down 90 cents, or a fraction of a percent, to $116.52 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange.
