Rams Hire Coach Sean McVay

The Los Angeles Rams on Thursday hired former Washington Redskins’ offensive coordinator Sean McVay as the team’s new head coach. In his new role, McVay, 30, becomes the youngest head coach in the National Football League’s modern era. McVay was with Washington for the past three seasons and helped drive the development of Redskins’ quarterback Kirk Cousins, who had 4,917 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and a 97.2 passer rating for the 2016 season. As a whole, the Redskins offense ranked third behind the New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons for the 2016 regular season, averaging 24.8 points per game. The Rams were looking for a coach who could help foster the growth of its rookie quarterback Jared Goff and improve the Rams’ struggling offense, which has been the worst performing offense for the past two seasons. McVay, who has never been a head coach before, started his NFL coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers under Jon Gruden, who was also considered for the Rams’ top coaching position. His brother, Jay Gruden, is the current head coach of the Washington Redskins. In addition to the Rams’ leadership change, the Chargers’ Chairman Dean Spanos on Thursday announced the former San Diego franchise is officially moving to Los Angeles, which will now have two teams for the 2017 season. The Chargers were founded in Los Angeles and played one season in 1960 at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, which is where the Rams currently play until the team’s $2.6 billion Inglewood stadium is completed in 2019.
