Connor Theilmann: 20 in Their 20s (Young & Prosperous)

Vice President of Business Operations ServiceTitan, Glendale Age: 25 ServiceTitan offers a cloud-based software platform that helps residential contractors manage a range of tasks including booking jobs, dispatching technicians and processing payments. The company has raised more than $326 million in venture capital. Theilmann oversees investor relations and expansion into new markets. Measurement of Success: Success equals results minus expectations. Expectations aren’t success, they’re a baseline. You don’t get ahead by meeting expectations, you get ahead by doing things above and beyond expectations. That’s how I measure success. Most Interesting Aspect of Job: At ServiceTitan, we move fast, and we are always looking to make big bets. That results in a wide variety of interesting problems to solve. Personality on the Job: I’m approachable, hardworking and ambitious, and I create an environment that is equally challenging and fun. I question everything — it comes from a place of curiosity and the need to know. I believe this is an important quality for anyone who wants to be extraordinary at their job. Biggest challenge? Focus. At ServiceTitan, we are blessed to have more opportunities than resources, but it means that resource allocation becomes a challenge. We solve this by testing everything, working harder to squeeze a few extra hours out of the day and intense data analytics to inform our decisions. Most Memorable Experience: Our recent series D funding of $165 million and leading the largest series B in my home state of Texas last year. Attraction to Career: I’m a competitive person. I’ve always loved the competition aspect of investing and entrepreneurship. I also like the idea of making a career by predicting and building the future. Biggest Misconception About the Profession: Oftentimes, startups view new funding as a celebration. While it’s important to acknowledge the win, funding is, first and foremost, a responsibility. It’s a responsibility to our customers, our employees and our investors – one they trust us to deliver on.   How This Generation is Different: People in my generation are significantly less attached to their current job or location. We move jobs more frequently, and we’re open to switching cities for new opportunities, which is far different than my parents’ generation. Future Goal: Really just one: Make the biggest impact possible for ServiceTitan’s customers. Career Advice: Be bold, surround yourself with great people and understand that obstacles are simply opportunities you have to take advantage of. Also, be willing to make big bets that can fail. As long as the payout for success is higher than the proportional payout to failure, it’s a good decision.
