Capstone Recycling Effort Paying Off, Company Says

Capstone Turbine Corp. has saved about $15 million since starting its extensive parts remanufacturing program four years ago, it announced Tuesday. The Van Nuys company’s remanufacturing program focuses on the strategic reusing, repurposing, and refurbishing of microturbine parts returned from the approximately 9,000 microturbines worldwide from both scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities. The program also helps to reduce the company’s environmental footprint both in its products and in its microturbine manufacturing efforts. Chief Executive Darren Jamison said the program helps in reducing the overall amount of material that would have gone into landfills or other waste streams. “This is essentially an environmentally friendly steel recycling program that is on top of the estimated $253 million in annual energy costs and 350,000 tons of carbon we have saved end-use customers,” Jamison said in a statement. Shares in Capstone (CPST) closed Wednesday down 1 cent, or less than 2 percent, to 73 cents on the Nasdaq.
